Sopcic wins Championship!!!

Sopcic doesn't lose a single set the entire tournament!

Sopcic tops Dynasty Champion-JT 6-4, 6-4!!!

On the 11th anniversary of 9/11, the TowerTennis Championship was honored by an opening ceremony performed by Guy Kidney (retired), Keith Belling, and Chris Axtell. They performed our National Anthem in a threesome of wind instruments.  Click here to watch a video of their performance.

KB,KY,CA and Nora
A challenge coin given to Delano for his service in Iraq was used for the coin toss.  Sopcic wins the toss, but elects to receive.  Players are on-serve until Sopcic breaks JT from deuce.  Edging ahead to a 3-2 lead, Sopcic extends his lead to 4-2, after fighting off several ad-outs.  JT is able to close to 4-3 after Sopcic makes several errors ranging from short dropshots to long volleys.  A winning slam, followed by three JT errors finds Sopcic leading 5-3.  JT easily holds to close to 5-4, but Sopcic dominates his service-game to win the first-set as darkness begins to effect play.

BW wins Fantasy Trophy
During intermission Fantasy Champion BW was presented his trophy for successfully selecting the players with the most victories throughout the season.  Broadway is a skilled fantasy player in many sports - leaping ahead early in the season, and dominating his competition throughout.

Interviews during intermission were heated!  JT attributed his first-set loss to Sopcic's style of game "dragging him down".  Meanwhile, Sopcic claimed that Dynasty Champ-JT's game was "One dimensional, making him unable to deal with my variety of shots".

At this point in the match, darkness prevented the resumption of play.  Players and spectators grew restless. KB assisted by tracking down facility maintenance personnel which claimed a generator failure earlier in the week would prevent the lights from lighting.  Dynasty Champion-JT seemed displeased - exclaiming the virtues of the courts in Ankeny!  Suddenly, the lights flicked on unexpectedly, and play resumed!

The brown-eye!
The wind which had slightly effected the first-set diminished during the second-set, and play was noticeably improved!  Players break each other, as a JT forehand hits the netcord, bouncing over Sopcic's head for a winner.  Sopcic fails to execute his patented brown-eye, followed by a failed dropshot to permit JT to level the set at 2-all.  Sopcic finds himself down 40-15, but executes a winning volley, a winning slam, and a stellar brown-eye to take advantage!  When JT errors into the net - Sopcic finds himself up one set to none, and leading 3-2 in the second.  Sopcic then dominates his service-game (holding at love), then breaks JT after a hotly contested game to lead 5-2.  JT sensing imminent doom, musters the resolve to close to 5-4, but Sopcic (serving for the championship) quickly jumps to TRIPLE CHAMPIONSHIP POINT!  JT fends off not one, but two championship-points before sending one long!  Sopcic wins his first TowerTennis Championship 6-4,6-4!

Special thanks to all who helped throughout the season:  BW, CA, KB, KI, KS, KY, TB, and others.  I would also like to thank my son Matthew for his help with the website, and providing the twitter-feed during the championship match.  I would also like to thank everyone who donated for a gift card presented to me at the conclusion of the tournament.  I hope to see you all next year... SV.

2012 Trophies being prepped for tomorrow's championship!

By Steve England - ESVN (fair & balanced). On the eve of the TowerTennis Championship finals - one wonders what must be going through the minds of the finalist. Are they confident...  are they nervous...  do they realize the significance of the battle they are about to undertake? As a dispatched former champion - I would like to offer my own thoughts on this epic battle only a day away.

As I write this the men's finals of the US Open are underway, and I reflect upon the women's finals which concluded just yesterday.  Number one in the world - Victoria Azarenka was two points away from claiming the championship, but could not close the match!  This was much like my own inability to put down Dynasty Champion JT in the semifinals! Like Azarenka, I had opportunities to win, and as Azarenka credited Williams' physical and mental strength as a player for her demise.  I too, must credit JT's perseverance and resolve to fight back from imminent defeat, for my own!  If fact, I made a trip to the bank earlier today to secure a crisp $50 bill to pay JT the bounty placed on Sopcic's head earlier in the season - just in case he wins!

What JT showed was a determination that only champions possess. Frankly, I thought Azarenka had the match in the bag, but Serena Williams stayed the course, fought to the end, and eventually persevered!  JT possesses this same ability!  When you couple his past accomplishments with his ability to fight until the end - JT stands a good chance of extending his record to an unprecedented five titles!

Sopcic however, was a finalist last year, and has only improved over the summer!  I would say that considering the Croatian Sensation's undefeated record, and general ease in which he's defeated all who has crossed his path, that Sopcic is slightly favored.  I've even heard some younger players say that Sopcic is: "A man among boys".  Tomorrow night we will see if youthful brawn, or slightly older brawn (with four titles to his credit) will persevere... either way it will be a match to remember!

Championship Match

Tuesday, September 11, 6:30pm, Norwalk Tennis Complex, Norwalk, Iowa.

Having successfully edged a victory in the semifinals - Dynasty Champion JT looks to extend his reign of dominance by defeating the Croatian Sensation!  Last year's finalist Sopcic enters the final match undefeated in 2012 competition!  Sopcic hasn't even lost a set in this year's tournament, but JT is determined!  This match could be a three setter, extending well into the night!  Don't miss the climatic conclusion of the 2012 TowerTennis Championship - Prime time under the lights, Norwalk!

CONTROVERSEY ERUPTS ON EVE OF TOWER TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

Letter to the editor:

Barry Craig (Associated Depressed)

Des Moines (AD) – Anonymous sources in Des Moines have confirmed a major conspiracy to overthrow the Dynasty Champion in this year’s Tower Tennis tournament.  A three- headed monster, consisting of Dean Ruther, Steve England and Matt Sopcic, tops the list of those allegedly involved in the well-organized coup.

The controversy began when investigative reporter, Axe Christell, (name changed to protect his family’s true identity), uncovered disturbing new evidence in DSM Tower Tennis; including receipts tying Steve England and Matt Sopcic to a tennis professional in Urbandale, IA, as well as recent purchases at a local hardware store for some form of surface altering substance, potentially to be used on a tennis court.  Witnesses close to the story report seeing a hooded man applying an unknown substance to the surface of the Norwalk tennis courts during the late night hours… the very courts on which the Tower Tennis championship is scheduled to take place tomorrow night.

How did a seemingly good- natured, local tennis tournament become so ripe with corruption?  A few years after beginning the tournament in 2004, Steve England allegedly began to experience financial difficulties after spending thousands on homebrew beer equipment, only to drink up all his profits.  In desperation, he turned to Dean Ruther, a well-known beer drinker and investment mogul with an evil laugh.  Seeing an opportunity to experiment in his dream of social engineering, beginning with Tower Tennis, Mr. Ruther was only too happy to help England in his time of need.  Overnight, Ruther began to pull the strings of the Tower Tennis tournament.

The crowned “Dynasty Champion”, Jason Toelle, grew up in a modest home in a small, blue-collar town outside Toledo, Ohio.  Instilled in him at an early age that hard work and dedication are the hallmark of American values, Toelle learned the benefits of competition, honor, and education and that a man’s achievements are only as great as his dedication to them.  This all led to him learning the sport of tennis at an early age.  Going on to perfect his game over the years while serving in the U.S. Navy, Toelle dreamed one day of working for the FAA in the hopes of competing in the DSM ATCT Tower Tennis tournament.  His dreams came true when in 2004, Toelle won his first Tower Tennis championship, going on to win again in 2005, 2006, and 2008!

At some point, Steve England confided in Mr. Ruther that he felt entitled to a championship.  Seizing upon this opportunity to grab more power, Ruther set about engineering the Dynasty Champ’s downfall.  In destroying Jason Toelle and thrusting England atop the throne, Ruther would cement his power over England and the entire operation.  To do this, a worthy opponent would need to be found and they had one in mind… Jeff Bode.  The plan was to have Bode placed at DSM ATCT and paid, in homemade beer, to eliminate Toelle from tournament play in early rounds in order to increase England’s odds of winning the coveted championship trophy.  The plan was initially a success, but England and Ruther saw the potential for collapse in their scheme when Bode became increasingly volatile and unpredictable.  Las Vegas seemed far enough away, but a backup plan was needed.

Matt Sopcic, an uppity Chicago native, was young, athletic, and eager to please; quickly becoming the next pawn in a demented game of chess.  Not wanting Sopcic to run off the rails like Bode in the past, Ruther and England were forced to keep him under tighter control, even resorting to supplementing his diet with performance enhancing drugs and personality altering medications to keep him likeable and happy in order to avoid raising suspicions.  These performance enhancing drugs, however, did not come without side effects.  Frequent outbursts during training and fits of rage at small, innocent children who dared enter the TRACON began to reveal concerns of Matt’s colleagues.  Also… man-boobs.

Some controversy arose early in Sopcic’s tennis career when allegations surfaced that he had indeed received professional instruction, in spite of his initial claim to the contrary.  Caught lying to a grand jury, Sopcic was eventually forced by England to throw the 2011 tournament to avoid further investigation.  All the while, ESVN and parent company MSN-SV, the major media contributors to Tower Tennis, appeared to diminish the allegations.  Both companies are owned by Dean Ruther and his henchman, Steve England.

This brings us to this year’s Tower Tennis tournament, where we’ve already witnessed a sudden, late change to the bracket layout, leading to an unknown (Zeke Proctor) winning the Southeast Final championship after losing his first match, forfeiting his next two, and playing an old man in his fourth.  Another participant (Kevin Broadway) witnessed his comments at towertennis.net being viciously censored after merely replying to a hateful, roid-rage driven rant at the hands of Matt Sopcic!  These occurrences, by themselves, are bad enough, but put together with the fact that the finals is scheduled on Sopcic’s home court, can only lead one to conclude that the tournament may be fixed!

Steve England’s anti-Dyanstyism and Ruther’s quest for social engineering hit one significant hurdle this year when Toelle defeated England in the semi-finals, thus ruining England’s hopes for a third championship, but not Ruther’s end goal.  Ruther’s hopes to end Toelle’s all-American dynasty now rest solely on the girly shoulders of his minion, Matt Sopcic.  So far undefeated, Sopcic’s chemical enhancements seem to be working; however, not wanting to relinquish control, Ruther and England have resorted to scheduling the match at a biased location where they are alleged to have altered the playing surface in Sopcic’s favor!

The 2012 tournament is about more than just tennis.  This is a battle between good and evil, right and wrong.  It is a war of ideals where some people believe in destiny while others desire to control outcomes.  On the surface, it is a simple tennis match between Jason Toelle and Matt Sopcic, but the big picture reveals so much more.  The all American boy versus the machine of social equality!  Ask yourself, what do you stand for?

Semifinal Preview: DR vs TB

Dean looking for revenge in a rematch of last year's semifinal!

By Steve England, ESVN - Suffering from atrial fibrillation, a coronary stint, high blood pressure, and a heart attack damaged heart -- Dean will take on the 28-year old Croatian Sensation in a semifinal quest for glory!

In last year's semifinal these two squared off against each other as well.  Dean was effective at preventing Sopcic from gaining net position, but Sopcic's perfection of his "Brown-Eye" maneuver (a retreating two-handed reverse overhead lob) neutralized Dean's lob.  Sopcic gained an additional edge by attacking Dean's 2nd-serve, but the match was still very close!  Each player won 13-games in a match which went three sets!  Sopcic edged Dean 6-3,1-6,6-4 in last year's semifinal.  Will this year be different?  Both players have improved their games considerably!  Dean has honed his skills against the top player's this year, but Sopcic remains undefeated in 2012 tournament play.  Only two matches remain in this year's tournament!  Who will earn the chance to play JT in the finals?  Don't miss this semifinal rematch - Friday, August 31, 12pm, Norwalk Tennis Complex!

Dynasty Champ reemerges as dominant force!

JT knocks Defending Champ-SV out of tournament!

Harmon Park, by Matt Sopcic, TTN - In my short 2 years of tower tennis I have never seen so much talent match up head to head as was witnessed today.  Dynasty champ JT and 2 time defending champ SV put on a show for the ages!  What is a match of this caliber without a little controversy though?  SV was quick to point this out because when he pulled up to Harmon Park, JT was being warmed up by a fellow tournament player, clearly upsetting the defending champ.  JT also claimed controversy because everyone in the surrounding 3 blocks appeared to be cheering for SV during the entire match.  Once the game started I thought SV might have had a legitimate argument with JT jumping out to a 2-0 lead.  At this point SV’s number one fan (DR) arrived and SV got the confidence boost he needed storming back to take a 3-2 lead (possibly because of all the trash talk thrown at JT from DR!!!!).   Each player took alternating turns leading in the first set before it was tied 6-6!  All of the games leading up to this point had long rally’s, often reaching 15+ shots before someone took the point.  It was very clear that neither player wanted to give an inch and SV had the momentum going into the tie breaker that allowed him to jump out to a quick 3-1 lead.  JT needed to dig deep in order to mount a comeback and that’s just what he did, storming back to win 7-3!  It was obvious that SV was a little frustrated letting the 1st set slip through his fingers but he came back strong and more focused in the second set.  JT didn’t have an answer for a lot of what SV was throwing at him and SV jumped out to a 4-2 lead.  By this point both players were very tired and it looked as though set #3 was inevitable.  Somehow JT was able to find a weakness in SV’s defense and stole the next 4 games to take the set and match.  SV’s snacks (anti muscle cramp food) that he ate between games did not do their job because it was clear that his speed slowed significantly (from cramps) in the last 3 games of the second set which hindered his abilities.

Ask anyone in attendance today and they will say that the level of game play that each individual brought to the court was good enough to win the tournament without any doubt.  Can JT keep this momentum going into the finals?  I know SV will focus again in the off-season to make a run for a title next year and possibly a little revenge on JT.  Congrats again to both players for an excellent performance, it really is a shame that someone had to lose but that’s what makes this tournament challenging.

The Final Four!

Who will become the next champion?

  • Dynasty Champion JT hopes to win an unprecedented fifth championship, and extinguish the smack-talk TB throws his way!
  • Defending Champion SV hopes to equal JT's "Three-in-a-row" consecutive championships - and to do so at age 50!
  • Undefeated in 2012 - TB looks unstoppable, as he hopes to win his first championship, and continue his playful banter with JT!
  • Dark-horse DR hopes to surprise everyone, upsetting the balance of power with a sneak attack to win his first championship!
Only three men have ever won a TowerTennis Championship!  Two of them are still active controllers, and are in the Final-Four!  Will this year bring a new champion into the ranks?  Only three matches remain, and each one should be a battle!  Don't miss your chance to witness TowerTennis history!

Dean rounds out the Final-Four!

BY falls in the Quarterfinals 6-2,6-0!

Harmon Park, by Steve England, ESVN (fair & balanced) - This score doesn't come close to indicating the competitiveness of this match!  "BY's" game is remarkably improved over previous years!  With classic topspin ground-strokes - "BY" looks like an accomplished racket-club member!

Dean however, isn't nicknamed: "The human ball-machine" for nothing!  Virtually, every shot "BY" pounded Dean's way came right back over the net!  Even "BY's" bullet-serve was simply blocked back by Dean's eagle-eye, and steady-stroke.  Despite nearly every point being a multi-shot battle - Dean coast to victory with an impressive margin!  DR makes the final-four, and will now get his chance to play for glory!  One victory, and he's in the finals!  Two victories, and he's our new champion!

Sopcic advances to Semifinals!

TB eliminates DNR 6-0,6-4!

Harmon Park, by Steve England, ESVN (fair & balanced) - Sopcic looks unstoppable! Aided by numurous errors from Doug - Sopcic takes the fifth game without DNR scoring a single point!  On set-point, Sopcic tries to lob over, but this gives Doug a chance to slam!  Doug misfires the return, and Sopcic takes the first set in a shutout!

Doug usually comes alive in the second, and this match is no different! Winning the first game at love, Doug jumps quickly to a two-game lead!  Sopcic successfully catches up, then pulls ahead - Doug counters and ties again at 3-all!

Sopcic shows impressive physical ability with lunging second efforts to save points, and win games.  Sopcic holds a 5-4 lead, but is down 40-15! One more point, and it's all tied up again! Sopcic jumps to reach a lob - preventing a certain winner from landing, and avoiding a 5-5 tie by tagging the back of the baseline! Having dodged a bullet - Sopcic stretches for another lunging volley on match-point! Sopcic wins in straight sets: 6-0,6-4.

Semifinal Preview: A Clash of Champions!

Defending Champ vs Dynasty Champ!

By Steve England, ESVN (fair & balanced) - From the beginning of TowerTennis, JT dominated the action!  JT easily won three in a row (2004 - 2006), and played for the title again in 2007 and 2008.  In fact, the first five years of the tournament JT was the man to beat!  He lost to Rick Bohler in 2007, but avenged himself in a rematch in 2008.   In recognition of his accomplishments - JT was awarded the title: "DYNASTY CHAMPION"!

It's been four years since JT played for a title.  In that time others have risen to the top ranks.  To get another chance to hold the trophy high - JT must get past SV in the semifinals.  Defending Champion-SV has been in the title game the last three years in a row, and four times total.  This year he sits with two consecutive titles, and wants to equal JT's "Three-in-a-row" accomplishment which made JT the "Dynasty Champ"!

It would be an amazing accomplishment to witness!  On SV's 50th birthday... He will take on JT for a chance to equal his "Three in a row" record!  Can the aging defending champ get past the still youthful Dynasty-Champ?  This should be an excellent match to attend!  August 21, 2:30pm, Harmon Park.

"Remember the Alamo" says ZP - As CG falls to SV

CG leaves tournament competition on a high note!

Harmon Park, by Steve England, ESVN - CG starts out on fire, acing SV to take the first game of the match!  CG then doubles his victories in the second by taking two-games off the defending champ!  CG's game was strong, but his consistency faltered along the way!  CG's experience level would have made a victory against the defending champ unlikely, but he elevated his game to show he's a future threat to all who cross his path!  CG falls to SV 6-1, 6-2.

CG leaves tournament competition after convincing victories over AJ, RB, and ZP.  CG's only loses were to last year's finalist TB, and SV.

CG gives ZP a Texas sized boot out of the tournament!

File photo from 2010.

CG advances to the quarterfinals - ZP goes home to Texas!

Harmon Park, by Steve England, ESVN - Zeke hates to lose, and he especially hates to lose to Chase!  Still unhappy about his defeat to CG in 2010, Zeke sought instruction from an aquiantance which just happened to be a high school tennis coach.  Building upon his successful come-from-behind victory to win the Southeast Championship - Zeke was motivated to exact revenge upon CG!

Mr. Chase however, had other plans!  CG's game is quite accomplished, and tends to only lose to the top players.  CG reports that Zeke frequently attacked the net (generally a successful tactic), but not against a player of CG's caliber.  CG gives ZP a Texas sized booting out of the tournament by winning a straight-set victory 6-2,6-1.

The road to victory just got a lot harder for CG! With his victory over Zeke - CG will advance to a quarterfinal encounter with defending champion SV!  Then, if successful there - he'll have to face Dynasty Champ - JT before he can reach the finals! Not an impossible task... But certainly a couple formidable hurdles to overcome. Meanwhile, ZP makes plans to return home to his beloved Texas!  Thanks for playing Zeke... good luck, and all the best as you enter the big leagues!

BY defeats TR 6-3,6-2 in 1st-round of playoffs!

"BY" advances to the quarterfinals, for a showdown with "DR"!

By Ted Brindley, TTN - Today's playoff match-up between BY and TR was billed as the crafty veteran vs the young and rising phenom.  Would BY still have enough left in the tank for a win?  Or would TR rise to the challenge and continue his ascent towards the championship?  Safe to say those questions were answered in BY's resounding 6-3, 6-2 victory.  BY played well and consistent throughout the match while Ted was never able to get in rhythm and made unforced error after unforced error.  BY was able to capitalize on these errors and ran away with the victory.  With the loss this means Ted's inaugural Tower Tennis season is over, but don't worry folks he'll be back for more next season.  With the win BY advances to play DR in what figures to be a highly competitive match!   Note: Twitter coverage not available for this match.

Dynasty Champ advances to Semifinals!

Quarterfinals: JT eliminates OC with authority!

Harmon Park, by Matt Sopcic, TTN - I arrived at Harmon on Tuesday expecting such an epic battle between two titans of tennis that ESPN should have been there to cover the match.  Regardless of the final score this match did not disappoint.  I was able to warm each player up prior to the start and thought that OC had a very legitimate chance to win based on how he was practicing.  JT would definitely need to bring his best game possible to secure a victory and that is exactly what he did.  From the start it was clear that no player wanted to give his opponent any advantage as most of the rallies reached double digits and over half of games went to deuce.  JT’s patience paid off though as he was able to get to and return almost everything OC threw at him (which was a lot). Because of this OC then kept pushing the envelope, trying to get anything past JT, which in turn lead to multiple unforced errors.  OC’s first serve, which is the fastest in tower tennis, started to land on first attempt often but a little too late in the 2nd set to be able to achieve a comeback victory.  This loss did not sit well with OC and I know he will be using it as motivation for next year’s tournament.  If JT plays the rest of the tournament the way he played Tuesday he is a lock to win it all again.  Whoever plays the Dynasty Champ next better have their A+++ game because anything short of that won’t be enough.  Congrats to both players and their continued success in this and future tournaments.

DNR advances to Quarterfinals!

DNR eliminates AJ in the first-round of playoff action: 6-3,6-0.

DNR will now advance to the quarterfinals were he will face his biggest challenge to date!  Waiting for him next round is an encounter with the Croatian Sensation!  A victory here for either player makes them one of the final-four!  Both DNR and TB have played for a title, but each fell short in their respective quest.  DNR was runner-up to JT in 2004, while TB came in second last year.

BW wins Fantasy Championship!

ESVN-Sports calls the 2012 TowerTennis Fantasy Championship for BW!

Des Moines, by Steve England, ESVN - With the regular season over, and the playoffs underway.  ESVN is prepared to go public, and call the 2012 competition for Kevin Broadway!  All other competitors have been mathematically eliminated.   BW's fantasy prowess extends beyond that of football!  Kevin used his astute eye for judging athletic ability, and analytically projected the number of wins likely to be achieved by each player.

Congratulations BW!  You are the 2012 TowerTennis Fantasy Champion!

Nate advances to Quarterfinals!

OC routs KS in first round of playoffs!

Harmon Park, by Matt Sopcic, TTN - While pulling up to Harmon Park today Nate's truck said the outside temperature was 108°F and I can’t even begin to imagine what the court temperature was!  Regardless of the extreme heat both OC and KS came to the court ready for battle and it was evident right from the start.  The first game of the first set took 15 minutes to complete due to neither player wanting to submit.  Hitting deuce 7 times with each player holding multiple advantages, one 19-shot rally, and plenty of unforced errors was exciting to watch but OC came out victorious and set the tone of game play early.  His lightning fast backhand coupled with a very improved forehand managed to drop in play 80% of the time making returns for Schewe difficult.  KS was able to get to many of Nate’s shots, but the speed that Nate put on the ball made it hard for Kyle to send anything back that was challenging for Nate.

After winning the first set 6-1 both OC and KS contemplated finishing the second set another day, it was very clear that the heat was taking its toll on both players.   After an extended break both players decided to continue on but it seemed as though KS had lost a little spring in his step.  OC appeared to have sensed this and made more of an effort to send shots alternating to both sidelines.  Kyle’s ability to get to these sideline shots dropped drastically and OC was able to finish the second set with relative ease 6-0.

Congrats to both players as OC will now face the Dynasty Champ-JT and KS will continue improving his game for redemption next year.

AJ wins the last Regional Championship!

DH battles from behind to level match one-set all, but falls in the third!

Norwalk, by Steve England, ESVN - This was an intense match which ebbed and flowed in each player's direction. DH takes an early lead, then extends to 4-2, helped by a forehand service return which she ripped crosscourt as AJ swings and misses!  DH lobs over AJ to take the advantage, and is one point away from a 5-2 lead, when AJ is helped by a forehand down the line, and a DH miss-hit as the ball strikes her frame.  DH loses the chance for a commanding lead, as Todd's serve starts to zero in on the service-court!  Finding his stride - AJ breaks at love winning three straight - propelling him to a 5-4 lead.  Serving for the set - AJ holds three set-points against DH, before Todd rips an ace for a come from behind win!

DH takes another early lead in the second, after her lob attempt knocks Todd's racket out of his hand!  Holding at love... She leads 3-1, before Todd backhands deep crosscourt.  DH attempts a high lunging backhand in response, but the bounce is too high!  When DH tries to volley from the baseline, it curves wide, allowing Todd to tie 3-3.  Todd wins two more to lead 5-3, and is just two points away from a straight set victory, when DH nails the tee to hold.  At a pivotal point in the second... AJ double faults, helping DH to tie at 5-5!  Todd doubles again on set-point, as DH takes four straight to level the match one-set all!

The games of the third were hotly contested, but AJ edged ahead 4-1, when he lightly taps a return just barely over the net.  DH breaks to close, then aces AJ for the advantage, but falls behind and double faults on game-point down!  AJ leaps to a 5-2 lead, and gets to serve for the match!  From 30-30... DH attacks the service return, but AJ blocks it back!  The ball falls almost vertically downward, just two inches on Deanna's side, giving Todd a match-point!  Todd screams with defiance and grunts loudly, as he nails a blistering service ace for the win!  AJ defeats DH 6-4,5-7,6-2.

Last chance for a title!

Winner goes to playoffs, and name on trophy... loser goes home for the season!

AJ and DH finish up the regular season, Saturday July 21, at Norwalk Tennis Complex!

Norwalk, by Steve England, ESVN - When these two last played each other it was what is becoming more the rule than the exception!  A 100° + day, where heat exhaustion was a very real factor!  So real in fact... AJ offered to forfeit, unless DH permitted him an extended rest in the shade.  DH's sportsmanship proved to be her demise!  Rejuvenated by his rest, AJ overpowered Deanna with forceful strokes deep to the baseline!  This instantly put Deanna on the defense, where AJ then had his choice of offensive options!

This year could be a different story!  As the only female player in the tournament - DH is always at a disadvantage when it comes to power.  Despite this, she frequently defeats male players!  Her game has improved considerably, and poses a very real threat to all but the top players!  Meanwhile, AJ hasn't played much this year!  With his free-time taken up with softball coaching - AJ goes into this title match having only played twice, and unpracticed!  Use to the power strokes MM throws at her... DH may even be able to cope if AJ tries to overpower her!  I predict a close battle... perhaps with a surprising outcome!  Don't miss this last chance for a regional title:  Saturday, July 21, 9am, Norwalk Tennis Complex.

Excalibur is resurrected!

photos by Kyle Schewe

OC wins Northeast Championship!!!

Harmon Park, by Steve England, ESVN - It's a joy to watch when two player's intensely want to win!  Broadway was the underdog in this match, but he made up for it with drive and determination!

When Nate arrived - He unsheathed Excalibur from it's protective cover, then promptly laid waste to BW's quest for glory!

The games went to OC one after another until he lead 5-0 in the first!  Then... suddenly Broadway comes alive!  BW closes with three straight games to reach 5-3, before a forehand error on set-point gives Nate the first battle of the war!

BW falls behind in the second as well, but battles back to tie, then jumps ahead 4-3!  Nate counters by edging into the lead again!  Leading 5-4... Nate holds several match points against Broadway.  Kevin's determination was evident!  He fought off the match points, and held several game-points himself!  BW just couldn't get the upper hand on Excalibur's master!  Nate becomes Northeast Champion, 6-3,6-4!!!

Match Preview: Northeast Championship BW vs OC.

By Steve England, ESVN - The Northeast Championship could be a blowout, or an upset!  As I look through tournament history - I can only find a couple common opponents for these two combatants. Nate defeated KN 6-1,6-3 in 2011.  In that same year BW lost to KN 6-2,6-4.  The only other common opponent is RB, but the comparison spans two different years.  RB's game has improved significantly... so his defeat of BW this year is difficult to compare with the routing OC put on him in 2011.

Broadway has speed, stamina, and consistency.  He also has a keen eye for reading his opposition!  Meanwhile, I've believed for a couple years now, that Nate is the dark horse of the tournament!    I wouldn't be surprised if Excalibur rises up to smite all who cross it's path!  Live coverage of the BW/OC match available via twitter.  #BWOC2012

Playoffs begin!

Post season offers some great match-ups!

Norwalk, by Steve England, ESVN - Only two regional championship remain unresolved as we enter the post season!  BW/OC will battle Tuesday July 17.  While, AJ/DH are likely to finish up within the grace period.  We lost six more players during the regional championship round!  Those who remain provide the potential for some classic battles!

I hope those of you now eliminated had a chance to taste victory along the way!  If so, let that inspire you to reach for more next year!  Many of you have the ability to be very good tennis players.  With proper instruction, and a little practice your name could easily be on the trophy!

DNR wins Southwest Championship!

DNR survives multiple set-points down to eliminate MM!

Colby Park, by Steve England, ESVN - At stake today was a playoff berth, a Regional Championship, and an opportunity for a spousal match-up in the playoffs! DNR starts off with a double-fault, but quickly recovers with three service winners, and a forehand down the right sideline to hold.  Serving was Mark's nemesis during the first-set!  Mark double-doubles twice, and totals eight!  This essentially gave Doug two uncontested games!  Doug easily wins the first-set 6-1!

The second set was a completely different story!  Mark gets control of his service game, and nails three great serves to easily hold at love!  Mark has a couple great chances to extend his lead.  One was after Doug double-faulted, then suffered a bad roll off the netcord.  The other was when Mark lead 40-15, but he double-faults three times!  What could have been a 3-0 lead, turns into a 1-2 deficit!  Mark plays catch-up as players exchange games until tied at 4-4.  Mark then makes his move, taking the lead at 5-4!  Mark goes on to hold three set-points against Doug, but can't close the deal!  DNR averts a 3rd-set when Mark's lob is long.  Mark takes the lead again at 6-5 - holding yet another set-point, but double bounces to lose the point!  DNR survives a total of four set-points before forcing a tiebreaker!  In the breaker DNR dominates, only allowing Mark two points as he takes the Championship 6-1,7-6(7-2)!

Dean wins South Championship!

KN battles every point... but falls to Dean's consistency!

Harmon Park, by Steve England, ESVN - Although Dean initially finds himself down - DR targets the right sideline to get KN on the run!  KN misfires, then doubles to lose serve.  As the set progresses... KN draws DR wide, then nails a forehand winner crosscourt.  Dean counters by getting KN on the run, then aims behind him as his momentum takes him out of the point!  KN executes a half-volley backhand drop, then jumps on a weak serve with a crosscourt forehand winner!  Dean returns the favor with a forehand winner to force set-point,  then benefits from a dropshot error to take the first set at love!

The second set was highlighted by Dean getting a favorable roll off the netcord, then drilling a passing shot as KN approaches the net!  KN intensifies his attack on Dean's serve, and prevents a shutout by taking a game at 3-1!  Dean executes a dropshot winner, then strokes deep to the left corner.  A retreating KN errors on the return, but follows with a winner to close!  After an intense 20-shot rally... KN's forehand fails!  DR volleys toward the sideline - forcing KN into a defensive backhand.  The ball dribbles off KN's racket, and it's game, set, match for DR!  Dean wins the South Championship 6-0,6-1!

CG makes the Playoffs!

CG defeats RB 6-2,6-3 to win the East Semifinal Consolation (QF winner)!

Colby Park, by Steve England, ESVN - Although I've noticed great improvement in virtually every player in the tournament.  None, have improved their game more than RB!  Prior to this year, Ryan had never won a tournament match (except by forfeit).  This year he had decisive victories over KI, KB, and BW, with an impressive showing against TR!  Ryan has embraced a healthy lifestyle, and was a consistent participant in Tennis-Tuesday.  RB leaves tournament competition this year with a loss to CG.

CG began tournament competition in 2010, and quickly racked up four impressive victories to make not one, but both semifinals!  CG's only losses throughout his tournament history, have been to finalist!  With this year's victory over RB - CG makes the playoffs, and gets his name on the trophy!

Schewe falls short of West Championship!

Schewe makes playoffs as West Runner-up!

Colby Park, Windsor Heights. By Steve England, ESVN - Schewe begins the match with a service winner, but SV recovers for the break.  A first serve percentage of over 80%, coupled with some errors by Schewe propels SV to a 4-0 lead before Schewe closes out a 40-30 game with a monster serve!  Schewe gets on the board, but SV rips a forehand down the line to lead 5-1, then recovers from 40-15 down to take the first set 6-1.

At the beginning of the second, player's end a 15-shot rally when KS gets a favorable roll off the netcord.  SV counters with service winners, which KS had difficulty returning.  Add a few unforced errors, and Schewe quickly falls behind to a 3-0 deficit.  Schewe aces SV in the next game to take the advantage, then wins when SV hits the net!  Schewe prevents a second set shutout, but SV racks up the remaining games for a 6-1,6-1 victory!  SV wins the West Championship and gets a first round bye in the playoffs - Schewe gets his name on the trophy with an impressive run - earning the title of West Runner-up!

Northwest Championship goes to BY!

Retired controller earns name on trophy!

Grimes, By Keith Belling, TTN - BY overcomes 85° heat, 10-12mph winds and the lack of a lawn mower to defeat KB in tennis action up at Grimes Recreational Area tonight. It was a battle filled with mistakes, high moments, and other such drama that took 1+29 to finish. Even the fellow playing with his kids at the next court over must have wondered why a picture at the end of the BY/KB match was necessary. Apparently he hadn't heard of towertennis.org. (Must be living under a rock somewhere...)

With visions of Roger Federer these two young men took to the courts to display their finest strokes. And then they played some tennis.
The first set saw KB jump to a 1-0 lead, then BY battle back. It ended up 6-2.
The second set was a bit tighter and ended up 6-4. It appears as though both players had trouble holding serve.
Not sure there was much else to say. KB tried to call 'hinder' twice on the fence behind the court. BY would hit a high shot with topspin and tailwind; by the time it came down after bouncing KB would've had to scale the fence to get it. Hmm...

Heatwave continues... Norwalk courts on fire!

Don't let the heat delay your match...

If you think you’ll never play tennis in that kind of heat, think again. It happens more often than most would imagine and it's been commonplace this summer! When temperatures in the mid-90’s or low 100's mix with direct sunlight on a hard tennis court, it is unavoidable. The court surface becomes hot enough to cook your lunch – figuratively and literally.  So how can you and I be expected to not only survive, but also to compete and have fun on hot summer days? Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Hydrate -- Drink up to a gallon of water a day in advance of play in extreme heat. But be sure to mix up your fluid consumption with a sports drink so you don’t flush your own much-needed electrolytes down the toilet! A 2:1 water to sports drink is a good starting ratio. Just get your fluid intake done well enough in advance so you’re not running to the bathroom in the middle of a match. Then, on changeovers, be sure to drink steady amounts as well, up to one cup of fluid with that same recipe.
  • Clothing -- Cotton is cool but it also absorbs sweat and becomes heavy in the heat. Today’s high tech materials that allow sweat to pass through and evaporate is preferred. There are many brand names to choose from. Just avoid cotton t-shirts at all costs. Also stay away from dark heat-absorbing colors.
  • Shade -- Getting out of the sun as much as possible can make a big difference!  Wear a hat, put a towel over your head on changeovers, bring an umbrella, or sit under a tree. Changeovers are suppose to only last 90-seconds, but to avoid health issues... Take Five!

Sopcic blazes to East Championship!

TR refuses to quit… takes three in the 2nd!

Colby Park, Windsor Heights, By Steve England, ESVN - Sopcic remains undefeated, as he wins the East Championship!  With this latest victory, Sopcic enters the playoffs with a first round bye!  Sopcic is now only three victories from winning the big title!

photos by Kyle Schewe
Today's Regional Championship match with TR was yet another scorcher!  The heat index hovered around 110°, but the temperature did not slow the hopes of these two players!  Sopcic hoping to go undefeated, and TR with dollar signs in his eyes! Yes, the bounty for beating the Croatian Sensation has recently gone up!  Now officially totaling $80 (with the addition of Sopcic's own father), like Apple Stock... it's expected to keep climbing!

The first set was all Sopcic - from service winners, to overhead slams, to the brown-eye (a retreating two-handed reverse overhead lob), TR faced little chance against the force unleashed against him.  Sopcic shuts Ted out 6-0 in the first!

Sopcic made numerous unforced errors in the second.  One can only guess if it was the heat, or was he too complacent with his convincing first set shutout?  Despite his errors, Sopcic gets a favorable bounce on a ball striking the netcord to take a 3-0 lead.  Sopcic appears so confident at this point, that while waiting for a lob to return to earth... Sopcic noticeably contemplates a slam, but reconsiders!  Sopcic then (as if in slow motion), turns his back on the net to execute a brown-eye!  Sopcic then volleys so hard... that Ted half-volleys from behind the baseline for a passing shot as Sopcic approaches the net!  Ted avoids a second set shutout, then benefits from several Sopcic errors after an outstanding lob to close to 3-2!  Sopcic now slams a service winner at Ted!  Ted's service return was a home run, as the ball sailed over the fence! Sopcic then breaks Ted at love with a winner deep to the left baseline!  Sopcic leads 5-2, and is now serving for the match when out of the blue he double-faults!  His next serve is thunderous... but Ted blocks it back high!  Sopcic attempts a brown-eye, but this failed!  Sopcic then slams long, and puts the next one into the net!  Ted takes the game, and closes to 5-3!  The last game was competitive as well... tied 30-30, TR hits wide, then gives Sopcic a chance for a slam.  Sopcic slams it home!  Sopcic wins the East Championship 6-0,6-3!
